Private Helicopter Crash in Houston Claims Multiple Lives

A tragic helicopter crash occurred in Houston’s Second Ward, resulting in multiple fatalities, including a child. The incident happened on Sunday night when a privately-owned Robinson R44 helicopter collided with a communications tower, toppling it and triggering a massive fire.

The crash took place near Engelke Street and North Ennis Street just before 8 p.m. The explosion from the impact was so intense that it was heard at a nearby fire station, less than half a mile from the crash site.

According to initial reports, there were four people aboard the aircraft, although the exact number of casualties has not been disclosed by authorities. The Robinson R44 helicopter reportedly departed from Ellington Airport, located about 17 miles from the crash site, but the intended destination remains unknown.

Firefighters arrived promptly at the scene, working to extinguish the blaze, which was under control by 9:30 p.m. Officials also warned nearby residents to stay away from the area due to the presence of a propane tank.

Houston’s mayor emphasized that the outcome could have been far worse, as a butane tank was located nearby, posing a severe explosion risk. Some homes near the crash site experienced power outages due to the incident, but residents were confirmed to be safe.

Eyewitnesses described the horrifying moment when the helicopter hit the tower. “I saw the tower crumbling down. It was terrifying,” one witness said.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will conduct a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Authorities have urged residents to avoid any wreckage they may come across and report it to the police or fire department.

“This is a tragic event with a devastating loss of life,” officials stated. The scene remains under investigation, and further details are expected to emerge as the situation unfolds.
